Twice the Support
What if you could raise money for your group and help the environment. That would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it? Helping two for the price of one. We think so. And so would a lot of other people.

That’s why earth friendly fundraisers are so successful. Your supporters get to feel doubly good. 1) They help your organization, and 2) They contribute something to making the world a better place. This results in more sales and more profit for your group.

And a second benefit for you: this shows your organization cares for something greater than itself.

Here are three ideas for earth friendly fundraisers:

  • A toner cartridge and cell phone recycling fundraiser extends the life of these products and keeps landfill waste down.
  • A cleanup fundraiser beautifies your community and protects the environment.
  • An earth friendly catalog

Earth Friendly Fundraisers

Toner Cartridge and Cell Phone Recycling Fundraising
Why not recycle some of the 300 million cartridges that discarded every year. Or profitably retire some of the 150 million unused cell phones. These recycling programs are easy. And they can be run year-round with little effort. Here’s how it works.

Set up a free account with one of the recycling programs such as Recycle Rewards (rrewards.com). These recyclers send you pre-paid shipping labels, collection boxes and marketing materials. Your organization is paid on what’s collected.

Bring the collection boxes to businesses that use ink and laser cartridges such as banks, law offices, accountants and other firms that print a lot. When the boxes are full, send them back for cash credit.

Other places to collect cartridges are computer labs, libraries, small businesses, and retailers that sell cartridges.

Cell phones can be collected from individuals and businesses. Ask a to partner with a local cell phone retailer.

Cleanup Fundraising
Want to see the results of your work, try a cleanup fundraiser. You’ll create environmental awareness and make an immediate impact in your community. Here’s how to do it.

Finding an area to clean up. Look around your community or ask friends for places they know that need attention. Contact your town’s civic offices for ideas. Once you find the right place, set a date.

Gathering supplies. You’ll need garbage bags, rakes, gloves, and possibly biodegradable cleaners. Ask a local hardware store to donate these items. Find pick-up trucks to haul the debris.

Collecting donations. Start collecting donations at least two weeks before the cleanup. You can use a pledge format where supporters donate based on what you collect. For example, ask for 2 cents on every pound collected. Collect 1,000 lbs. and you have a $20 donation.

Set up collection boxes in local businesses before the cleanup. Collect donations on the day of the cleanup especially if in a high traffic area.

Have your town or city government advertise your event on their website and event calendars.

Executing the cleanup. Set up teams or assign everyone a different task. Properly dispose of all the trash and debris. Reward your team with a post-cleanup cookout. Ask a local restaurant or supermarket to donate the food.

Earth Friendly Products Fundraising
Partner with a company that supplies green products. Several of the most popular products are Smencils, DoDo Bags and aromatic soy candles.

Smencils
Smencils are #2 pencils made of recycled newspapers. They are soaked in different scents like grape, watermelon, and root beer and hold their scents for two years. You can actually see the newspaper copy when they’re sharpened. School kids love them.

Smencils are supplied in 50 count biodegradable buckets. Recommended selling price is $1 per Smencil with profit margins starting at 45%.

DoDo Bags
DoDo Bags are unbleached cotton totes to use at the supermarket in place of plastic bags. They hold 40 lbs, are made in American, and will last for years.

Take orders for the bags from friends, family, and co-workers for $10. When the selling period is over, send the order form in and you’ll receive the bags and your money. A portion of the profits goes to protecting endangered species.

Aromatic Soy Candles
There is no petroleum products in these candles—only all-natural ingredients like bees wax, soy and hemp. They last longer and burn cleaner. And they smell fabulous.

This is an order taking process with profits averaging 50%.

Summary

Wouldn’t it feel good to raise money for a good cause and help the environment? You’ll feel good and your supporters will feel good. And yes, even the earth will feel better thanks to you.
